Rev. Ann Lorenzini's expulsion letter from Chapel of Awareness

Chapel Guardian has received a communication (read it at the end of this post) from Rev. Ann Lorenzini. To Guardians' knowledge this is the first time she has openly addressed the circumstance of her expulsion from Chapel by the church Board of Directors. Her information is helpful because it confirms what Guardian has been receiving --- that students, service attendees and members are being misinformed about what happened to Rev. Ann. She addresses this issue directly in her statement below.

Chapel Guardian knows of other expulsions, including at least one other minister. This has been covered in past observations here. Rev. Ann's is significant because of her long association with the Chapel and close ties with Founder Rev. Gene Larr until his passing in 2006.

Rev. Ann has provided Guardian a copy of her letter of expulsion, provided here for you to read. Consider the misinformation Nell Rose Smith uses in her rationale for Rev. Ann's expulsion:

EXPULSION VS. CANCELLATION

Nell Rose Smith claims Rev. Ann (whose name she misspells in the letter) was responsible for "the expulsion of the entire membership". This is false. Not even the friendsofchapel.blogspot.com site referred to this particular action as expulsion. Friends of Chapel stated that the church "cancelled the memberships of everyone". The term expulsion by definition is related to punitive action. Even the Friends of Chapel acknowledged the action as cancellations, not punitive action (punishment).

The Chapel Board of Directors at the time (December 2009) made it clear in a letter from Rev. Ann to the congregation that the cancellation of all memberships was necessary for reorganization after the schism occurred. That was not punitive intent (expulsions). That letter was followed up by a new membership form for all to fill out, which Friends of Chapel ordered their faction not to acknowledge. Those new forms were being mailed back and accepted to the Chapel at the time mediation began, however. The action that the Board took was not punitive, it was procedural based on circumstances. Nell Rose Smith also seems to ascribe these actions as solely those of Rev. Ann, when they were Board decisions.

ECONOMIC AND GENERAL WELFARE?

Chapel Guardian find this issue cited by Nell Rose Smith as bizarre. She refers to Rev. Ann's "failure to meet the fiduciary responsibility for maintaining the economic and general welfare of the Congregation." This is also false.

Under Rev. Ann's leadership and contributions, the Chapel of Awareness received new energy-efficient windows. Rev. Ann also saw to the continual maintenance of the Chapel. Under her watch, while the Landmark/Friends of Chapel were inactive, Rev. Ann installed new fans in the Sanctuary for better energy efficiency.

Finally and most disturbing, while Nell Rose Smith and the Landmark/Friends of Chapel were inactive in the church and suing it, Chapel of Awareness successfully rallied the membership to donate for a new roof. Nell Rose Smith and her group are now the sole beneficiaries of what Rev. Ann and the membership did.

QUOTING BY-LAWS

Nell Rose Smith quotes the By-Laws to Rev. Ann in saying that the Chapel "shall be open to those persons who are keenly interested in actively bringing into action the concepts and directives as set forth in the Articles of Incorporation". But this is exactly why Nell Rose Smith and the Landmark/Friends of Chapel were removed from the membership rolls in the first place. They were not active, and expressed no interest whatsoever. How can Nell Rose Smith accuse Rev. Ann of the same thing?

CONCLUSION

In calling the Friends of Chapel out on their lack of activity or contact with Chapel for several years as of 2009,  what Rev. Ann and the Board of Trustees ended up doing at the time was really expose a faction of the membership --- lead by people following Landmark philosophy, not Chapel or Gene Larr --- standing at the sidelines to take over assuming Rev. Ann would fail upon the founder's passing in 2006.

That failure did not happen, and they were asked to justify their absence. That led to the lawsuit and their ultimate takeover of Chapel. In that takeover, the new Board under Nell Rose Smith's leadership did not honor the spirit of the mediation agreement, expelling Rev. Ann even though her position on the Board was recognized.

Given the subject matter of the letter, Nell Rose Smith oddly signs it "Sincerely yours".

subject Re Chapel of Awareness Spiritual Church

Dear Guardian,

Thank you for your vigilance this past year in posting the activities at the Chapel of Awareness Spiritual Church in an objective manner.

For the past many months, I have received phone calls and cards wanting to know where I’ve been, and saying: “…Many of us pray that you will one day have a change of heart.”  I have explained the reason to them, but there are some who still don’t know the details of, and for, my absence.

Therefore, I am attaching a letter I received in June, 2010, from Rev. Nell Rose Smith, as Chairman of the Board, which will fully explain why I am no longer there.  You have my permission to print it in its entirety, or in part, as you see fit.

Again, thank you for your continued interest in the Chapel.

Sincerely,

Rev. Ann Marie Lorenzini

In Touch out of touch?

As has been common practice with the Landmark/Friends of Chapel leadership since they took over Chapel of Awareness, only certain members are receiving the church newsletters. There has yet to be any explanation of their rationale for this.

Chapel Guardians' opinion that they are excluding members of the chapel (which goes against the spirit of their own lawsuit) have gone unchallenged for months now.

The latest, dated "Winter 2010", has more interesting items to consider.

ANNUAL MEETING:

Of most interesting note is the lack of transparency when it comes to the Annual Meeting election results. When the Landmark/Friends were suing Chapel of Awareness, they demanded transparency to the point that they were publishing election results on their blog. Now, as leadership of the chapel, there is no announcement on the Chapel website, no mention in the newsletter, no email announcement.

The only reference to the election results is a cryptic announcement in the "In Touch" leaflet: "A list of the names of the full board of directors for 2011will be posted inside the Chapel Sanctuary."

This notice is exclusionary. It essentially tells chapel members who are not able to attend services (some of the very people they claimed to speak for in their lawsuit) that they are not privy to the workings of the church. This attitude runs counter to their goals as claimed in 2009-10.

CHURCH NAME:

As already noted by some Guardian contributors, the Landmark/Friends group continue to misuse "Spiritualist" in the name of the organization, not in keeping with founder Rev. Gene Larr or the bylaws (which they sued over, as well).

The use of "Spiritualist" in the name of the church now has also gone unchallenged by the Landmark/Friends group. Chapel Guardian can only draw from this that such a name and philosophy is intentional, unless they clarify this to the membership. If anyone truly understands Chapel of Awareness philosophy, they know that there is a difference.

HEALING "CENTER":

Sherry DeLoach's "Healing Center" (formerly referred to as Healing Clinics, a name which connotes medical knowledge) is reportedly closed for part of the Winter, yet her imanifestwellness.com website does not state this. She also continues to promote her own phone number and contact information for what is being touted as a chapel function. Another cryptic statement in the "In Touch" leaflet: "Please use the kitchen entrance".

"SPIRITUALISTS BIBLE":

The leaflet also continues to promote a publication that the Landmark/Friends claim is the work of founder Rev. Gene Larr. Guardian have not dealt with this issue directly yet, but will say now that the validity of the publication deserves to be confirmed for all who care about Chapel. Most notable, the name of the book ("A Spiritualist's Bible") itself, which runs counter to Tau Sing, Rev. Larr's own words, and the bylaws of the church. Chapel Guardian believe it is highly unlikely that Rev. Larr would ever title a book in this way, as evidenced by his philosophy and every Chapel and personal published work before this.

More confusion on Chapel of Awareness' name

from xxxx

subject Re Chapel of Awareness name

Dear Guardian, the Chapel of Awareness is being referred to as a "spiritualist" church.  Rev. Eugene C. Larr, specifically named the church the Chapel of Awareness Spiritual Church.  He said that he wanted to distinguish it from other Spiritualist organizations.  The new Friends of Chapel should at least use its correct name.

This name is prominent on their letterhead they are using to send out their newsletter, InTouch.  According to the Chapel's by-laws that the Friends of Chapel published on line several months ago, Article 1 Section 1 states: "The name of this Corporation is 'Chapel of Awareness Spiritual Church Corporation,'..."

In addition, the "Preamble" states: "We have formed this organization for the purpose of bringing forth the truth and universal knowledge that resides in all mankind..."  "All mankind" refers to all religions - spiritualist and otherwise, and is unique among churches.

It appears that the new Friends of Chapel group have taken upon themselves to rename the Chapel among their other questionable activities.  To rename the Chapel would require a change in the by-laws. membership.  They should go out and look at the sign in front of the building to know what the name is.

Chapel of Awareness and Landmark Education Forum

Introduction

It has been known for some time that some of the most vocal and virulent of the Friends of Chapel group are practicing disciples of Landmark Education Forum, formerly known as Est.

An article at The Huffington Post (Inside the Landmark Forum) provides an accounting of the Landmark experience, and it offers insight into the behavior of the Friends of Chapel.

While links to the Chapel takeover after Reverend Dr. Gene Larr's death to Chapel's Landmark practitioners were often hard to pin down, the new Chapel of Awareness web site and publicly available online information show a concrete indication of these links.

Consider:

Board member Francisco Fan lists that he is a graduate of Landmark Education and served as an Introduction Leader (LinkedIn screen capture above)

Web committee leader Terry Hall is also a graduate of Landmark Forum; screen capture above from one of Terry Hall's blogs indicates his expertise

Friends of Chapel member (as named on the friendsofchapel blog site) Brigette Callahan is also a graduate of Landmark Education Forum and was in its Leadership Program from 2002-08; she is also listed on Terry Hall's new Chapel of Awareness web site as a developer alongside Suzy Sisler
___________________________________

Reverend Nell Rose Smith is also a Landmark graduate according to Chapel members, although  online confirmation can't be located as of now
___________________________________

It has been known for some time that members of the new Chapel leadership are also active in an organization called BNI (Business Network International), which Internet searches show has an international following among Landmark followers.

Some examples of the Landmark-BNI connection:

Happiness After Midlife
Dr. Fred Horowitz writes that he went through Landmark. Among what he notes:

"I had the opportunity of working for 3 years for Werner Erhard and Associates, the predecessor of Landmark Education. It was a terrific experience. Much of my approach to life and midlife coaching comes from the model that Landmark Education uses."

"One of my coaches who I was working with at the start of my coaching career challenged me to start a BNI (Business Network International) chapter in Montreal. There were none. This seemed like a good way to develop business, so I took on the challenge and started one."

BNI and Landmark Education
Dr. Fauziah Mohamed Yunus also writes about how he went through Landmark and became a part of BNI. Among what he writes:

"I started my journey in Landmark Education in 2003. Doing the Landmark Forum was yet another turning point for me."

"The two largest influences of how I lead my Life has been Landmark Education and Business Network International."

Why this information matters for Chapel of Awareness

One of the concerns expressed among Chapel membership in 2009 and early 2010 was a takeover mounted by a business-oriented "personal coaching" (a.k.a. "life coaching") faction of the church that holds views not in line with Chapel of Awareness founder Reverend Dr. Eugene C. Larr, but more in line with philosophies of Landmark and self-styled lifestyle gurus such as James Arthur Ray (Internet searches reveal that Amy Hall, Terry Hall's wife and Friends of Chapel member, was employed by the Ray organization).

Several of those leading or involved with the Friends of Chapel interest group -- which sued the Chapel of Awareness to regain membership reinstatement after being removed off the member rolls because of years of non-participation -- are followers of Landmark Education Forum or related or similar organizations. Nell Rose Smith, Terry Hall, Brigette Callahan, Francisco Fan, and Ernie Linkous are part of that group. Four of them (Smith, Hall, Fam, and Linkous) now make up half of the Chapel of Awareness board of directors.

The behavior of Nell Rose Smith, Terry Hall and Francisco Fan, and the group Friends of Chapel as a whole, is representative of Landmark philosophy by the following:

1) During the process of the Friends' legal action, in Winter 2009/Spring 2010, spearheaded by Nell Rose Smith (as named in the lawsuit), Friends of Chapel members engaged in intimidation tactics including drive-bys of the building during Chapel functions (as witnessed by several people on-site). Intimidation tactics through December 2009, leading up to and during the Annual Meeting that year, required the Board of Directors to call in armed private security to keep the peace.

2) In late 2009, the Friends of Chapel interest group used their blog (friendsofchapel.blogspot.com) to engage in a smear campaign against the sitting board and ministers. The tactics on the blog included unsubstantiated allegations of physical assault and financial trickery, none of which was ever supported by evidence. The intimidation tactics also included the planting of unsupported rumors among the congregation.

3) Nell Rose Smith lead the effort to sue the Chapel nonprofit corporation to gain control, which was successful only through settlement in mediation. Upon following the mediation settlement, Smith and the new board majority forced their remaining -- duly elected -- opposition off the board, against the spirit of the mediation settlement. They then expelled opposition corporate members and ministers, one of whom was among founder Gene Larr's first ministers, the other who served as pastor for two decades.

This behavior mirrors tactics taught and practiced in Landmark Education Forum. As current board member Terry Hall writes on his blog:

"I know that Landmark Education is committed to transforming the planet at any cost. And it shows."

"At any cost" ... That is exactly the attitude witnessed from the Landmark-trained leadership of the Friends of Chapel, exhibited in its behavior, lawsuit, blog, and subsequent takeover of the church. Note what's lacking in Terry Hall's "transforming the planet" statement: The words of founder Reverend Gene Larr, who always taught to behave for what's "highest and best" for humanity. (Landmark is known for pushing change for personal self-interest.)

A further look at Hall's blog lays out the philosophy of the new Chapel leadership ... to run it as a business and not a spiritual organization or house of worship. Hall's blog describes the usefulness of a "referral culture" in an organization, as exemplified in the philosophy of Landmark and BNI.

Since the Friends of Chapel takeover this year, the following has happened:

1) "Referral culture" in action: As the Friends leadership emerged on the Chapel board of directors, Francisco Fan reportedly began recruiting Chapel congregation members for BNI. This information was given to this blog by Chapel members who wish to remain anonymous out of concern over retaliation.

2) Using the Chapel as private business: After the Friends takeover was complete, Sherry DeLoach began offering what is in effect private-practice ministerial healing "clinics" (as advertised) using Chapel of Awareness resources.

3) Promoting the Chapel as a business, not a religious organization: Since the Friends of Chapel-controlled board created its Web Committee, Internet searches of Chapel of Awareness show a proliferation of listings of Chapel under business-promotional web sites, including merchantcircle.com and ebusiness.com. Oddly, the Web Committee listed Chapel of Awareness as a "pastoral counseling" program based in Aliso Viejo, not just Encinitas, on majoreducation.com.

4) Message control: The Friends of Chapel leadership was openly developing and circulating Chapel of Awareness publications when they were not seated on the church board. These include 2009's "The Season" and proofs of something called "The Spiritualist's Bible". A proof of the "Bible" was witnessed being quietly shown during the 2010 special election, before the election took place. Prior to and during their litigation, Friends of Chapel leadership emphasized gaining the copyright to Reverend Larr's work, inside and outside of Chapel. This reflects a Landmark tactic -- copyright control of some kind -- as detailed by the Electronic Frontier Foundation in an accounting of Landmark's emphasis on copyright litigation for message control.

In Chapel Guardian opinion, these correlations show that the Friends of Chapel sought control of Chapel of Awareness out of the desire to build a hub for their own business, networking, and guru-style "life coaching" ventures, not the spiritual development of the people who hunger for it and walk through Chapel's doors seeking it.

Chapel Guardian is not interested in debating the substance of Landmark teachings. That is not the point.

The potential dangers for Chapel of Awareness, in Chapel Guardian opinion, lie not in Landmark Education Forum itself or its teachings, but in the actions of the new Chapel leadership in forcing "the program" over Chapel founding philosophy, especially through groupthink. This is an attitude counter to Chapel founder Reverend Dr. Eugene C. Larr's philosophy.

Action doesn't fit philosophy

"Right thought. Right action." This has been a saying used by the Friends of Chapel, attributed to Chapel of Awareness philosophy.

In remarks on his web site, Reverend Eric Berg pays homage to Chapel of Awareness founder Dr. Reverend Eugene C. Larr. Chapel Guardian will not question the inspiration and devotion, but the philosophy stated on the page conflicts with actions of the Friends of Chapel leadership.

Chapel Guardian ask Reverend Berg, and all of you who read this, to weigh the philosophy and the actions of the church leadership under the Friends of Chapel group (bold type added for emphasis):

a) Reverend Berg states: "Being a minister at Chapel is not about respect and admiration. True monastics know that these things are distractions from the path."

This conflicts with the actions of the Friends of Chapel leadership, as seen in the promotion of Reverend Sherry DeLoach's personal ministry practices and the inherent demand for, and perhaps expectation of, respect in the filing of a lawsuit against the church.

b) Reverend Berg states: "One of the requirements Gene imposed on candidates during or prior to their oral examination, was that a minister should be able to demonstrate their skills on command and not have to wait for the right conditions."

But the Friends of Chapel behaved exactly opposite to Gene's teaching as expressed here by Berg. Upon Gene's death, Reverends Nell Rose Smith, Sherry DeLoach, even the late Reverend Donald Schwartz, and numerous members allied with them, left Chapel of Awareness to wither as its weight was placed on one minister, Reverend Ann Lorenzini. Berg says that Chapel ministers should "not have to wait for the right conditions," yet that is exactly what Smith, DeLoach, Schwartz, and others, did as they waited to act ... eventually in the form of a lawsuit and smear campaign when their lying-in-wait backfired in their Board-approved dismissal for non-participation and lack of contribution in the organization.

c) Reverend Berg writes: "What good is a minister who can only help a desperate person 10% of the time because the other 90% of the time they are feeling grumpy?"

This is a valid question, as the attitudes of the Friends of Chapel group over the past few years speak for themselves.

d) Reverend Berg writes: "'All within my power' does not mean bullets, dollars and lightningbolts [sic]. It means a true minister is willing to sacrifice his or her own agenda, attachments, and personal luxury."

Again, the Friends of Chapel leadership and members behaved exactly opposite of this. Reverend Berg should  know, quite frankly, that bullets do not always take the form of that which comes from a gun. The Friends of Chapel made their agenda clear last year, setting up a shadow organization with a Cardiff post office box and holding shadow services, publishing non-sanctioned Chapel material and soliciting donations. They made their attachments clear, particularly in the form of their blog and subsequent lawsuit.

e) Reverend Berg writes: "'I pledge myself to the help and guidance of all mankind...' This is really profound. Gene noted that it goes far beyond the Chapel congregation and community. It goes beyond responsible service and conduct, too."

True. But it starts with the Chapel congregation and community, and starts with responsible service and conduct. The behavior of the Friends of Chapel leadership, in Chapel Guardian opinion, must call this stated intent into question.

The Season of Chapel of Awareness

"Duck, duck, goose, let your thoughts loose."
Loranna, Joy guide of Carol Chadwell
(The Season, Summer 2010)

If there is a clear example of the fallen level of teaching and guidance at Chapel of Awareness since the Friends of Chapel took over this year, in Guardians' reading the quote above represents it.

The quote was selected for "The Season" flier, edited by Friends of Chapel member Suzy Sisler.

The Friends of Chapel have now published two editions of "The Season", a compilation of supposed quotations from spirit teachers of Chapel of Awareness students and staff.

The first one published in November 2009 was put together by the Friends of Chapel, while they were not the leadership of the Chapel, while claiming it was an official publication of Chapel of Awareness.

Around the time of Founder Rev. Gene Larr's passing, there were grave concerns expressed about the level of instruction, mentoring and adherence to Rev. Larr's teachings. Those who were called into question quietly left Chapel of Awareness at the time of Rev. Larr's death. They formed the core of the Friends of Chapel, now in control of the church.

What The Season represents is a simplistic interpretation of Rev. Larr's teachings, in Guardians' reading. This is based on what these teachers have chosen to represent themselves, their students and Chapel of Awareness to the public. Examples, as published online at the Chapel webpage:

"Duck, duck, goose, let your thoughts loose."
-- Loranna, Joy guide of Carol Chadwell

"Mustard seed, grape seed. Both bear fruit. ..."
-- Chin Lee, teacher of Kathy Greene

"... It is fun when you enjoy life. ..."
-- Tau Lin, teacher of Sharon Lubert

The quotes above mirror the philosophy of teaching there now, as exemplified by teacher Rev. Eric Berg's writings on his blog (revericsblog.blogspot.com): "I’ve never tried mustard on my potatoes but it might not be that bad. The colors certainly are complementary while they are still growing ... But after a while you get some life experience and are pretty certain you won’t like certain combinations of things ... Common sense tells us that this is wisdom ..."

Chapel Guardian would never question the personal meaning of The Season's material to those who have received it. The concern is not with the students, but the vital feedback they deserve from teachers and mentors. It demands a fundamental question of understanding: What are people actually learning from all of this?

What does one learn when the majority of the supposed information from "teachers" is as simplistic as saying "The best way to have clear thoughts is to think clearly"? Or the information is as basic as a present-day nursery rhyme or game? And that's repeated in quote after quote?

Ironically, the most important warning to the Friends of Chapel of Awareness group comes from Rev. Gene Larr himself, as quoted in The Season. Guardians' worry is that Rev. Larr's wisdom is now being drowned out by the majority of minutiae as represented by the instruction at Chapel now. Not only should they quote him, they must listen to him ...

"Delusion is your greatest roadblock. Try again."

"As members of the board, they were the very targets of the lawsuit they later supported. Their contributions to the Chapel have been confusing at best, deceptive at worst, in Chapel Guardian opinion." Another interesting side note to this comment is that Amy Milford was NOT named on the law suit. Rev. Nell Rose Smith substituted Amy Burger's name for Amy Milford in the document. Amy Burger did not serve on the board until much later that year and was not involved in the decisions being disputed.

Re: personal promotion

(Anonymous by request; the point below is interesting since some in Friends of Chapel accused fellow ministers of behaving exactly this way and accused them of violating bylaws)

So one of us Chapel Guardian followers has a question about the Healing Clinics.

It's already been noted that Reverend Sherry and the Chapel don't use the Chapel of Awareness phone number or a Chapel email address as contacts for these clinics, but I noticed something else. The clinics are scheduled from 1 pm to 6 pm on Tuesdays. ... In the middle of the day, during the work week? That's not very accessible to regular people let alone Chapel members, unless they don't work. It just seems to me that these are hours that ministers would schedule for personal counseling appointments __ a private practice __ not an open clinic.

That's not in keeping with the church bylaws, at least as I understand them. I'm uncomfortable seeing Chapel used in this way.

Letter from the Chapel of Awareness chairman

The Chapel of Awareness annual report and meeting materials arrived for most members, apparently, in the last few days. Some Chapel members in contact with Chapel Guardian have shared some of their thoughts about the materials.

As the annual meeting approaches, Chapel Guardian point out more things to consider regarding the activities of the current Chapel leadership. This time in the board chairman's letter:

Chairman Rev. Nell Rose Smith tells us that "nothing is more precious than those who step forward - even in small ways - to volunteer their time, energy, resources and ideas." This must explain the precious absence of so many --- including Rev. Nell --- over nearly five years as Rev. Ann Lorenzini struggled to keep Chapel of Awareness patched together. This must also explain Rev. Nell's precious commitment to sue the Chapel, Rev. Ann, and fellow members she now serves with. It must also explain her strong commitment to push through the expulsions of members and ministers, including Rev. Ann.

In Chapel Guardian opinion, Chapel of Awareness members should keep this behavior in mind as the annual meeting approaches. The majority of Chapel voters may well see the current board's behavior as appropriate for a spiritual organization, and fair enough if so. But they must remember that many do not see it that way.

Letter from the Chapel of Awareness pastor

The Chapel of Awareness annual report and meeting materials arrived for most members, apparently, in the last few days. Some Chapel members in contact with Chapel Guardian have shared some of their thoughts about the materials.

As the annual meeting approaches, Chapel Guardian point out (again) the inconsistencies in behavior and thinking that cause us to question the activities of the current Chapel leadership. Consider:

1) Amy Milford and Louise Morin are mentioned prominently in Pastor Don Miller's report. They are listed as "co-leaders of the Ways and Means Board Committee". Louise also heads the tape department. Chapel Guardian are pleased that Amy and Louise appear so committed to the Chapel after serving on the board in the prior year, with Rev. Don, in which they contributed little to the board and turned on Rev. Ann Lorenzini, as did Don. So where was this commitment in the past two years? Recall that the three of them initially backed the discontinuation of memberships of those who stopped participating in Chapel activities over several years. As members of the board, they were the very targets of the lawsuit they later supported. Their contributions to the Chapel have been confusing at best, deceptive at worst, in Chapel Guardian opinion.

2)  It's ironic that Don would also highlight two people who were 100% absent over the final five years that Rev. Ann was pastor and board chair: Melissa Hall and Suzy Sisler. Rev. Don even notes Melissa's "long hiatus". Melissa (like Rev. Don, Suzy Sisler, Amy Milford and Louise Morin) was an active member of the Friends of Chapel group, which sought to take over Chapel from fellow members.

3) John Dorian is also listed, another member who did nothing for years while attacking the character of Rev. Ann Lorenzini and others, in open meetings, as a member of the Friends of Chapel group.

4) The Friends of Chapel pastor also commends Rev. Nell Rose Smith as board chair, who (among other "accomplishments") engaged in a mean-spirited campaign to successfully expel Rev. Ann and several other members who did not fit within her vision of Chapel.

5) The Friends of Chapel pastor also highlights the activities of Rev. Sherry DeLoach. In his letter, Rev. Don states that Rev. Sherry has started healing clinics: "... The first time that Chapel has offered something like this to the public". Chapel Guardian find this statement interesting since Rev. Sherry never uses Chapel addresses, phone numbers, or email addresses to promote these supposed Chapel clinics --- only her personal and business contact information.

Chapel Guardian notes that these ongoing concerns are not lost on a good number of the Chapel membership.

Disputed claim in obituary

Reverend Nell Rose Smith provided information about Reverend Donald Schwartz as fact, when it is in legitimate dispute based on historical information, personal account, and recent court action. An obituary (Donald Schwartz, who loved animals, dies at 79) in the San Diego Union Tribune says: "In 1972, Mr. Schwartz, with Dr. Eugene C. Larr, founded the Chapel of Awareness Spiritual Church to teach psychic and spiritual development. He focused on healing, Smith said, and helped others contribute to their own healing."

Nell Rose Smith, the only Chapel source used in the obituary, has taken this disputed information and emphasized publicly Donald's name first now even before founder Reverend Gene Larr. Notice how it states "Mr. Schwartz ... founded the Chapel of Awareness Spiritual Church ...".

The Chapel Guardian would never ask that Donald's decades of service and contributions be put in doubt, and we never will, but to continue the Friends of Chapel political maneuvering after his passing is unfortunate in our opinion.

Co-founder or not?

Chapel Guardian have found more information of interest concerning the argument over whether Donald Schwartz was a co-founder of Chapel of Awareness. It was already clearly established in the bylaws who the founders were, in life and in spirit. This issue of Donald's position of co-founder only erupted when the Friends of Chapel rallied around Donald to sue the church and then, later, expel members and ministers not inline with the Friends agenda. If Donald had been a clearly-established co-founder from its foundation, then the following statement from Rev. Nell Rose Smith should have been irrelevant because the new web site would have had him named automatically, if it was established fact:

"Also, Rev. Donald should be identified as the Co-founder."

The Friends of Chapel were directly involved in the original website for years until the schism of 2009-10, and the issue of co-founder was never addressed until out of nowhere it came up when they organized and sued, under Nell's name. Nell's statement, in Chapel Guardian opinion, only shows an attempt to continue and solidify the grandstanding they started in 2009.

Eric Berg's answers to a Christian critic

The Chapel Guardian have uncovered an interesting corner of cyberspace that shows a curious possible sea change in the definition of what Chapel of Awareness is.

Chapel of Awareness was founded by Reverend Larr under the name Chapel of Awareness Spiritual Church. Around January, Friends of Chapel's Reverend Eric Berg answered a Christian critic's commentary about what he saw on the front of the building

The critic's comments are here at this link: The Church of Evolutionary Karmic Auras–and More!

What the critic has to say isn't an issue for Chapel Guardian; everyone has a right to an opinion. Eric, though, never directly answers the critic's repeated use of the term "spiritual". Instead, he addresses the differences between Spiritualists and "Spiritism," which he claims is "more occult."

Since the Friends of Chapel takeover, published Chapel of Awareness material has increasingly used "Spiritualist Church" as part of Chapel's name, and Eric explains: "While Spirtualists [sic] practice similar things to new agers, it is a religion dating back maybe 100 years. Typical Spiritualists are devoutly Christian, believing only that one may communicate with people after they go to heaven, so the choice of the term "church' is a natural one. Perhaps you were thinking of Spiritism which is much more occult"

So what is Chapel of Awareness anymore? Eric's explanation of Chapel to the blogger seems to emphasize spiritualists, when the blogger never took issue with that term in his criticism. Chapel leadership now continue to apparently phase in the name, "Chapel of Awareness Spiritualist Church", when that is not what Reverend Larr founded. The Friends of Chapel leadership, for example, titles most of Chapel's website pages as "Spiritualist Churches near San Diego | Chapel of Awareness", and some recent mailings from the Friends of Chapel leadership also have used "spiritualist" in the Chapel's title and descriptions.

So the Chapel Guardian must ask the Friends of Chapel leadership --- in direct relation to what Reverend Larr's founding principles were --- is Chapel officially now a Spiritualist church? Is it now aligning with one religion, Christianity, at least as Eric explained it, as opposed to the open philosophy that Reverend Larr based the organization on?

This question is made even more important with Eric's closing statement in his response: "Advertising the teaching of evolution at a church *does* sounds [sic] funny."

To be fair, Eric did also say: "Lastly, the founder was a paleantologist [sic] and astronomer, and loved science. As a result he wanted those who ran the organization to have a solid grasp of the basic scientific concepts such as evolution." That is of course true. But why not defend the Chapel's principle of promoting the idea that a church can indeed cover evolution as a principle, rather than saying it "sounds funny"?

More personal promotion

Friends of Chapel leadership continue to use Chapel of Awareness as a personal platform for their own events.

Reverend Sherry DeLoach continues to promote her "I Manifest Wellness" events on her personal website along with Craigslist and local newspapers. Captures of these listings are provided.

What makes it self promotion and not a Chapel event? Notice how Sherry DeLoach does not provide a Chapel of Awareness phone number or email address for her services. All contacts are personal phone numbers and email addresses. These events are not for Chapel. If they were, they would be promoted as such, and they are not. Chapel is only listed as a location.

When the December General Meeting approaches, will the Friends of Chapel leadership disclose how much money from these personal events has gone to Chapel in the form donations or rent, and how they are allowed under the bylaws?

The Friends of Chapel, including Sherry DeLoach, sued the church and accused members and ministers they expelled of this very practice, without proof or substance. Yet, for their own behavior, here it is.

"Halloween Spooktacular"

Chapel Guardian ask with all seriousness: How can our Chapel of Awareness be taken seriously anymore with an announcement like the one above? Their "new" Website is the public face of our church, and this is potential first impression. (Announcement Link)

During the time of conflict, the Friends of Chapel (now controlling the Chapel of Awareness) demanded to be taken seriously. When they felt they were not being taken seriously, they filed a lawsuit -- but after the conflict was supposedly resolved in mediation, they immediately began to erode that which they demanded. They laid quick claim to "channel" the Reverend Donald Schwartz almost immediately after his death. Now in the week of Reverend Schwartz's memorial, the Chapel of Awareness posts a Halloween party announcement complete with Casper the Ghost and a claim to have a "REAL GHOST!" at the event.

This kind of treatment of Reverend Eugene C. Larr's teachings, and those of the major belief systems of the World, is embarrassing and inappropriate, in Chapel Guardian opinion.

Regarding Chapel's handling of Donald

subject Regarding Chapel's handling of Donald

Friends,

I am mournful not only of Donald's death but of the sad state of affairs at Chapel now itself. The leadership's behavior gives me every reason to believe that their rallying behind Donald in the last year had nothing to with him, and everything to do with themselves. Here is why.

1. I as a member of this church never received any notice of Donald's passing. I had to find out here, and then wait for the "new" Chapel website to post something. Why is the leadership not communicating with us?? They were on top of it when they decided to sue the Chapel in Donald's name, and now they are dropping the ball on everything.

2. There has been no obituary posted for Donald that I can find. Why?? He was an acclaimed artist, including to such stars as William Shatner, and yet there is nothing about him anywhere. Why no word to the public??

3. The leadership and new pastor [Don Miller] are now claiming "Many at Chapel have spoken to Donald since his crossing, and he is enjoying his new-found freedom" [This is Reverend Miller's words]. Well this is very convenient that they would claim to have some level of exclusivity in contacting a man who just passed on [especially coming from a group whose members claim to channel one of the the holiest of holies, Jesus, with no sanctioned training]. This supposed contact with Donald would also indicate that his abilities for Spirit-side are superior to those of Reverend Gene Larr himself, which I cannot accept [With all respect to Donald's abilities and heart].

For the love of the Universe, let Donald adjust before trying to clog his path with your vibrations. That is disrespectful and not helpful. And all the "talking" seems odd given that Gene to my knowledge ordained only one medium in the last 40 years. In other words, it's not a simple diploma that just gets handed out to someone who passes all the tests. It is serious business that requires careful instruction and confirmation.

Chapel's credibility has been destroyed by these new claims as far as I am concerned. I believe they used Donald when he was alive to rally around and sue Chapel and now I believe they are barely giving him lip service now that he is gone. It only shows me they are "done" with him now that their fight is over and he has passed.

I am heartbroken.

The passing of Rev. Donald Schwartz

Chapel Guardian are saddened to receive word of the passing of Rev. Donald Schwartz.

Despite the ugly business that has continually taken place among special interests at the new Chapel of Awareness, there has never been any question as to Donald's dedication to Chapel over the decades. So it is with deep sadness that we mark his passing, and it is with highest and best wishes that his crossing has been peaceful.

Aside from word of mouth, there has been no official announcement from the new Chapel leadership as of Sept. 9. We await word from Chapel leadership about the circumstances of his passing, and plans for any memorial.

Website likens Chapel to "Spiritual Ducttape"

Does Reverend Gene Larr's philosophy amount to "spiritual ducttape"? The Friends of Chapel, now running Chapel of Awareness, apparently believe so.

A new website, "Chapel of Awareness Under Development" with a domain of "spiritualducttape.com", is now available online. Terry Hall registered the domain, according to Web domain ownership records. What is so disappointing is that it seems Chapel Reverend Bob Sisler has signed off on this unfortunate approach to Chapel philosophy, as the full front page link is "spiritualducttape.com/members/sisler3/" (image below)

The webpage information says "Chapel of Awareness Coming Soon".

From marketing alone, why would anyone consider joining a supposedly spiritual organization that refers to itself as "spiritual ducttape"?

What the Friends of Chapel plan to do with this domain is unknown.

Hi Guardian,
Who is chapel to demean metaphysical shops when it creates a Yelp page for itself soliciting reviews???  Yelp _is_ for storefonts and I think its tasteless for a church of any kind to promote itself there.  I am disappointed our old church is going in this direction.

Thank you,

subject RE: Yelp conflict of interest

Dear Chapel Guardian,

I am offended by the snobbery expressed in the Yelp review you write of.  I find it noteworthy too because the language Terry Hall uses smacks exactly of what the first reviewer complained about.  By speaking of "storefront psychics" and "paper mill" ministers he is lumping an entire community of fellow ministers and practitioners into a category that is inaccurate and lowbrow.  If he truly knows the history of Chapel of Awareness as he claims, he would know that GENE LARR himself ordained and educated many who have gone on to help so many people in the community no matter where we "hang our shingle".  I have known some of these people, some of whom have since passed into spirit.  How disrespectful.

If this is representation of the new Chapel of Awareness leadership, then the church really is in trouble, because the leadership should be proud of all of its ordained ministers and students who serve in such a diverse variety of ways.  They have no business slapping the faces of those who disagree with them, like Harmony Grove, or those in our community who serve with the highest purpose.  Chapel of Awareness, shame on you.

Highest Blessings,

Yelp conflict of interest

A page on Yelp.com has existed for Chapel of Awareness for some time, but only in the last few months has there been any activity. Yelp.com offers the opportunity to post positive and negative criticism about a business or institution. One of the marks of a spiritual pathway is the ability to accept criticism and grow from it.

Friends of Chapel behavior shows a lack of ability to take criticism and learn from the experience, in the Chapel Guardians' opinion. Now, again, exists evidence that this problem persists, now brought to the public sphere thanks to a questionable use of the Yelp site. The posts are shown below. The link is here: www.yelp.com/biz/chapel-of-awareness-encinitas

On June 2, someone posted a critical review of Chapel of Awareness. On July 30, new Chapel webmatser Terry Hall posted a review touting the virtues of Chapel. The way it's written, it's clear this is a response to try to counter the negative impact of the critical review.

Nowhere in the review does Terry Hall clarify who he is or his professional ties or leadership role with Chapel; it is written like "just another review."

Under the Content Guidelines in Yelp's Terms of Service, it states that "you should not review your own business or a business at which you have been or are currently employed." The Content Guidelines also state: "Conflicts of interest. Your reviews should be unbiased and objective. If there's any hint of a conflict, please don't post the review. For example, owners shouldn't sing the praises of their own businesses or bash their competitors, and users shouldn't comment on their current or former employers."

The Chapel Guardian will let readers of this post decide whether the original post is accurate in its criticism. What's clear, in Chapel Guardians' opinion, is the continued misuse of online outlets to self-promote while harming others. This is one of the dark legacies the current Chapel leadership risk leaving behind when their terms end.

Updates

Some updates, with a thank you to the members of Chapel willing to share ...

1. In mid July the Chapel Guardian were forwarded an anonymous message claiming a bizarre request from the Chapel Board of Directors to access expelled Rev. Ann Lorenzini's personal home computer and erase software. In the interest of keeping all parties anonymous in order to protect from retaliation, Chapel Guardian will not reveal more than this.

2. The Chapel's new leadership has created a Facebook page for the church this month. It's interesting how Sherry DeLoach's "Healing" event -- after being promoted on her personal promotional website -- is listed as a "free" event on the Facebook page. How does Chapel of Awareness benefit from a minister's personal event that's free to attend? Chapel has maintenance, insurance, services to maintain.

3. Another sign of the new Chapel's questionable ethics: Webmaster Terry Hall was deleted off Wikipedia for inappropriate self promotion on the global encyclopedia. Wikipedia tracks such deletions with its "Deletionpedia" mirror site. The Deletionpedia site states that Terry Hall's self entry was taken off Wikipedia for "blatant advertising." (see below)

This theme of questionable ethics and self promotion rests with people directly associated with Chapel (Hall and DeLoach as examples) who attacked Rev. Ann Lorenzini for this very claim, with no evidence. The evidence for their behavior, though, seems easy to find.

Dear chapel guardians...

I am just reporting in to be honest in what I feel since all the things went down with chapel. I am saddened to see the uncofortable nature of things. Some people from the friends of chapel frequent the E street cafe not far from the chapel and I have had to stop going there [a place a I love], because I am made to feel that I have to justify mysefl as to why I do not go to chapel any more. Not for benefit of me but because they some how take it personally that I do not go any more. I learned from chapel some time ago to believe in right thought and right action, and I stopped going to chapel completely after I found out that the friends of chapel took over and expelled 2 excellent and beautiful ministers. Revenge and expelling people is not right thought and right action. Chapel guardians. Please, do not stop taking our observations, because we need to keep track. Thankyou.

Hiding behind the expelled

Several Chapel Guardian observers have noticed that the new leadership at Chapel is continuing with unusual behavior:

1) Despite being in power since April, the new leadership continues to refer Chapel corporation business to Ann Lorenzini and Barbara Koenig, whom they expelled. Chapel Guardian observers have called routinely to the Chapel phone (last check was June 26) only to find a voicemail message giving Rev. Lorenzini's phone number, and Rev. Koenig's phone number, for official corporation business. This is suspicious. Why are they hiding behind people they expelled?

2) As of June 28, the Chapel of Awareness website continues to list the expelled ministers as "active" along with only the Friends of Chapel ministers. Revs. Lorenzini and Koenig had been shut out of services since April, two months before they were expelled. Again, this is suspicious. Why would the new leadership continue to list ministers as "active" who have been banned from this church?

3) The new leadership is closing some Chapel operations in July. Why?

4) Terry Hall continues a password block on the updates to Chapel of Awareness' supposed "new" website. Why are we of the congregation being blocked out of our own church's new site? Eric Berg has now password protected access to his website promoting Chapel of Awareness retreats. It was questionable enough that these retreats were only available to select Chapel members to begin with, but now congregation members won't even know they're offered at all.

Dear Chapel Guardian,

This is regarding your most recent posting of June 26, questioning why a former Board member was not expelled along with the two ministers and their spouses.

It is interesting to note that the new Pastor was also a former Board member and the one who made the motion to increase the corporate members' annual dues which was one of the grievances of the "Friends" lawsuit. Why hasn't he been the recipient of their most recent letter of expulsion?

Also, why is the Chapel being closed in July? The Chapel has never closed in July but has consistently closed down in August for a summer break. Just curious.

Please keep this posting anonymous. Thank you.

Former board member still on staff; why wasn't he expelled?

Yet another sign of the current Chapel of Awareness board's "loving kindness" ...

While they expel two ministers who served on the Board of Trustees that they disagreed with, they allow one of those ministers' board colleagues to continue to speak at the Chapel now.

It is widely known that Bill Grove, a reputable mental health professional, sat on the Board of Trustees that voted to suspend Chapel activities while under legal and psychological siege by the Friends of Chapel.

By the new Chapel junta's own definition, he also did not live up to his "fiduciary responsibility" to the Chapel by voting to suspend Chapel activities. But there he is, giving lectures ... not expelled.

It's interesting to note that all other former members of the board who also acted to suspend Chapel activities during the Friends' lawsuit have expressed no outrage over the treatment of the two ministers. Is that silence out of fear? Or Friends of Chapel payment for new loyalty?

The Friends of Chapel repeated "loving kindness" like an advertising slogan. Since when does "loving kindness" include eye-for-an-eye revenge? It doesn't. But don't tell that to the Friends of Chapel.

MINISTERS AND SPOUSES EXPELLED

Chapel Guardian have received information confirming expulsions at Chapel of Awareness, specifically two ministers and their spouses.

(One of the confirmations from a Chapel member is included at the end of this post.)

Letters were also sent out to former board members indicating that, despite the previous Boards acting in unison, no "grudges" were held against the rest. So the new leadership at Chapel has now admitted to retaliation.

The ministers expelled for life, and now barred from teaching at Chapel, are Rev. Ann Lorenzini and Rev. Barbara Koenig. Their spouses Joe Meyer and John Petrowski are banned for a period of time only.

These expulsions were carried out after they submitted official retirement letters, which the new Board acknowledged. The new Board also have allowed their spouses to return after a certain period of time while the ministers are banned for life. This further confirms that the Board's action was retaliatory in nature.

These expulsions, and their context, also raise other red flags in terms of the mean-spirited tactics of this junta:

1) At the "hearings" the new Board held to voice "grievances", Joe Meyer announced his retirement from maintenance, at which time Ernie Linkous (a pillar of the La Mesa business and civic community) "thanked" Joe to a round of applause. Then expulsion.

2) At those same "hearings" (including "grievances" that were aired without the presence of the accused), Ernie Linkous again "wanted to thank" Rev. Lorenzini and Rev. Koenig for their service to Chapel. Then expulsion.

Any reasons for these expulsions aside, this kind of two-faced hypocrisy is unbecoming of those who claim community service and spiritual and ethical behavior.

The behavior of the new Chapel junta is also two-faced because if they really believed in their case, they would have expelled all members of the Boards (including Rev. Don Miller and Rev. Sandy Smith) responsible in the decision-making that lead to their lawsuit.

These expulsions have completed the purging of knowledge necessary for Chapel of Awareness to function and teach legitimately. For example, Rev. Koenig is the only minister Founder Gene Larr ever assigned mediumship papers to, and those who truly know Chapel understand why. Rev. Lorenzini was chosen by Gene Larr to lead Chapel, and she did so for two decades despite the so-called Friends of Chapel.

subject Re expulsions

Dear Chapel Guardian, in your most recent blog dated June 17, 2010, entitled "Member expulsions impending," you requested information about any expulsions or threatened expulsions.

It is understood that letters have been sent out to the members of the former Board of Directors of the Chapel of Awareness Spiritual Church indicating what their future status in the Chapel to be. Some letters were benign indicating that no action would be taken against them and they were welcome to return to Chapel, classes, etc.

However, four letters were of total expulsion - two of them for life and two of them for five years duration. The former Chairman of the Board and the First Vice Chairperson received the lifetime expulsions. The former secretary and one advisor received the five year expulsions. Four other former Board members also received letters in which there was no action taken against them.

It is also understood that this was done in the spirit of "wrapping things up."

As a point of interest, the former Chairman of the Board had send a letter of full "retirement" to the current Board on June 5, 2010 and the letter of expulsion was dated June 14, 2010. How can someone be expelled who is no longer there? Perhaps their vitriole needed to be expanded one more time?

Member expulsions impending

Chapel Guardian have been told that the new Chapel of Awareness leadership are preparing to hand down several membership expulsions. We do not yet know who is being expelled and why, but Guardian have been told they are to be punitive in nature and not related to a lack-of-participation issue.

Chapel Guardian have been told that anyone who does not fall in line with this new leadership is at risk and that the threat of expulsion is being used as an intimidation tactic.

If you are a member who has been threatened with expulsion or in any way, or have been expelled, let Chapel Guardian know. Guardian will honor posts by anonymity or by name.

Getting what you give

One thing the new leadership of Chapel of Awareness should know (or at least one would think they would) is the principle that you get what you give.

For months, the "Friends of Chapel" as expressed and organized through their blog (friendsofchapel.blogspot.com) ... now in the form of the new junta in control of Chapel ... were relentless in using fabrication, twisted facts, and spiritual and character assassination to promote their own agenda. Such a push of negative energy required a push back, taking the form of the Chapel Guardian, now with the mission of keeping check on the activities and development of Chapel under the "Friends".

The Chapel Guardian were forwarded two recent "newsletters" for May and June and find them interesting. They show the depths of hypocrisy, disorganization, and questionable practices of the new group of leaders at the Chapel.

Of note to begin with: The new leadership is being shifty in the contact information being provided for Chapel, and have canceled classes for July. This has not happened to Guardians' knowledge in some time, if ever.

May edition:
Most odd is the phone number and P.O. box supposedly belonging to Chapel. The new leadership was wrong in the information they provided in their own newsletter, giving the phone number of a medical professional in the Chula Vista area and giving the P.O. box of a caterer in Encinitas. How could people who claim to know Chapel so well and care for it so much not even know the Chapel's proper phone number, or not know that Chapel hasn't had a P.O. box for some time, let alone a correct one?

June edition:
The "In Touch" newsletter only shows just how out of touch this new leadership really is. The newsletter is chock full of the need for members to get involved. But remember: The very people pleading for member involvement are the very ones who disappeared and left Reverend Ann Lorenzini to fend for herself with nothing after the founder's passing. This is hypocrisy.

Kathy Greene of the "Library Committee", for example, claims she is looking to "restore" the library. Restore it to what? It's been as it's been for who knows how long. There's nothing to restore.

Suzy Sisler, who was nowhere to be found until the new junta took over, is now heading "Public Relations" with a newsletter that pales in comparison to the one that was published weekly for services from 2006 to 2009. The new junta is not likely to even know of this newsletter because they were never there for all that time. Again, the hypocrisy runs deep with people so committed to Chapel who were gone for four years without reason.

Drucilla Kubicka
as "Ways and Means" is pleading for member involvement when, as the two named above, she was derelict in her membership for four years. Hypocrisy through and through.

Sherry DeLoach
touts her non-Chapel event (discussed earlier on this blog) as if it's related to Chapel. Those members who have received the "In Touch" newsletter will note that nowhere does she ask for donations to the Chapel.

It is interesting that the new junta is now instituting "Readings in the Round", something only brought back by previous leadership while the new leadership stood back and did nothing. Now they take others' ideas and use them for themselves.

Finally, "In Touch" announces the development of a new web site for Chapel of Awareness, which Chapel Guardian know is the work of Terry Hall, who has password protected its development from Chapel membership and who is involved with the controversial self-help guru movement.

Most outrageous is the touting of the so-called "A Spiritualists Bible" (or "A Spiritualist Bible" as named in the newsletter now) ... as the new junta claims founder Reverend Gene Larr's teachings as its own. Not for him, but for them.

subject Chapel Member Harrassment

Chapelguardian,

I am outraged and scared by the behavior of "our" chapel members since the new board and ministers entered the picture. I am frankly afraid to give my name and name those who have given me problems because of the principle of retaliation that seems to run through the chapel now. One person in particular has harrassed me when I have chosen not to attend services and classes and has claimed that I and others have "entered their thoughts". This person has said that the chapel teachers have confirmed that fellow congregation members have maliciously "entered their thoughts" and that they would report us to the Sheriff's Dept. for assault.

What responsible knowledgeable chapel teachers in their right mind would confirm this kind of nonsense and only fan this person's inappropriate behavior towards us?? What is this beautiful universe of ours coming to?? What would reverend Larr have to say about this?? Would someone with some ounce of credibility speak up about this??

The picture becomes sharper

Chapel Guardian recently received a goodbye post from a Chapel of Awareness congregation member, who asked to remain anonymous. There was a passage that caught the Chapel Guardian's attention:

"(The quote "Peace, Love and Harmony" is from a sign off to a May 20 email by Rev. Sherry DeLoach 1st Vice Chair, forwarded to me by another anonymous individual for my information. I appreciate knowing what is going on at "my" Chapel.)"

Chapel Guardian found this passage interesting because it indicates -- again -- that a mailing was sent out to some members of the congregation, but not others. Chapel Guardian have been told that the mailings show an email address from something called "imanifestwellness.com", and looking it up on Google confirms the web site's existence.

Chapel Guardian believe that the site, www.imanifestwellness.com (web site screen captures are below), holds clues as to what the takeover of Chapel of Awareness really was about: Making Chapel a vehicle to promote individual ministers' businesses and philosophies, not to save Chapel and Reverend Gene Larr's vision.

No one would deny a minister's right to run his or her own ministry, and Sherry DeLoach has clearly chosen a path to a self-sustaining ministry. There is nothing wrong with that. Chapel of Awareness philosophy and policy, however, discourage Chapel ministers from using Chapel property to promote and benefit personally from their work on Chapel premises. But Reverend DeLoach, now that she has secured a top seat on the Chapel Board of Directors, has announced on her website the following:

"Take Control of Your Wellness Healing Clinic
SAT. AUG. 14,2010 9:30 a.m.-noon Chapel of Awareness 560 Third st. Encinitas, CA 92024  Learn to take control of your wellness and perform your own self-healings during this half-day healing clinic. Private healings by appointment only following the clinic. e-mail for appointment." (imanifestwellness.com/News--and--Events.php)

Consider:

1) This is not a Chapel of Awareness event, yet it's clearly being held at Chapel. Private healings afterward, likely for a private fee, not a Chapel donation. Notice also that her site doesn't say to email or call Chapel of Awareness for more information, it's to email her.

2) Reverend DeLoach's book, "Without Doubt," is a large portion of her website (imanifestwellness.com/Books.php). It was also touted at the Friends of Chapel service in Fall 2009, at the height of the Friends of Chapel conflict. It will be interesting to see if the so-called "Spiritualists Bible" (supposedly containing the works of the deceased Reverend Gene Larr) eventually shows up in this section of her site.

3) Most telling: A look at the "Guest Book" section of her site (imanifestwellness.com/Guestbook.php?pageID=1) shows that 90% of the comments are from Friends of Chapel members, including -- Reverend Don Miller (now pastor), Drucilla Kubicka (now on the board), Sal Balletto (now on the board), Reverend Eric Berg (inactive at Chapel yet running "Chapel" retreats), Terry Hall (now apparently designing Chapel's new homepage), John Aho, Sharon Gaskill, Monica Hagen, Alan Story, and Sheri Wachtstetter.

The pattern of a specific, exclusive group of people outside the general Chapel of Awareness membership seems evident -- from those engaging in the lawsuit against the Chapel of Awareness, to the Friends of Chapel group, and exclusionary notices and promotions linked to the Chapel but not sent to the entire Chapel community.

The Friends of Chapel -- with Reverend Sherry DeLoach among the leadership -- seemed to have a plan in motion to take over Chapel of Awareness for their own self interest some time ago. It's the behavior that shows this. What the Friends of Chapel say and what the Friends of Chapel do have not been consistent.

It seems increasingly evident, judging by their actions, that whether non-active memberships had been removed from Chapel or not, this group had intentions of waiting for Chapel to "die" after they left it in limbo in 2006 -- After founder Reverend Gene Larr passed away. The removal of non-active memberships can only be read as an unexpected interruption in their overall plan. They sued claiming bylaw violations, were assigned mediation, got a new election, violated the mediation agreement with Chapel, are now themselves violating the bylaws, and -- worse than anything -- being secretive with the Chapel community.

The blatant self-promotion now taking place through Chapel of Awareness seems proof of this. They fought for their venue and got it. Preserving Reverend Larr's philosophy and legacy seems little to do with anything.

Whatever truly positive message Reverend DeLoach is trying to promote is being overshadowed by these concerns.

"Chapel" retreats

Before Chapel Guardian discusses this new topic, it needs to be said that we are saddened that good will and intentions are continually shattered by the Friends of Chapel group. We wouldn't be posting today otherwise, but we insist on being vigilant as we uncover more layers to this Chapel of Awareness takeover, and more information is provided to us.

It's been brought to Chapel Guardian's attention that Reverend Eric Berg, who was dismissed from Chapel in 2006, has been holding mountain retreats "under the auspices of Chapel of Awareness" since that time. Chapel Guardian doesn't know why Reverend Berg (a member of Friends of Chapel) was dismissed and we acknowledge it's not really our position to know, so it's not fair to judge him based on that event -- and we won't. (We note that it has been a subject of public dispute among the congregation.)

When it comes to hosting events as Chapel of Awareness, though, that's a public matter worthy of open scrutiny.

Chapel has had mountain retreats for many years, so there's no issue there. What's happened since 2006 is the offering of these "Chapel" retreats without the sanction of Chapel of Awareness, offered only to an exclusive group of people (most of whom eventually became Friends of Chapel).

Two web pages show information about these retreats dating back to 2006 and earlier: www.ecberg.com and retreat.ecberg.com. It was what occurred after 2006 that Chapel Guardian believes needs explanation (screen captures of the web pages are at the end of this post):

1) www.ecberg.com states that these retreats are offered "under the auspices of Chapel of Awareness". Interesting, considering that these retreats from 2006 and after have not (to Chapel Guardian's knowledge) been openly advertised to the congregation, were not discussed at Board of Trustees meetings, and were not announced at services or in the newsletters from 2006 to early this year.

2) Reverend Berg made himself responsible for taking payments from congregation members who attended these retreats (as stated on at least one of the web pages). This raises red flags.

If Reverend Berg was dismissed from Chapel of Awareness (he is still listed as inactive as of May 24, 2010), under what authority was he running these retreats "under the auspices of Chapel of Awareness"? Doing this placed Chapel unknowingly in jeopardy in terms of liability should anything have happened.

More alarming is wondering where the money went.

From 2006 to the start of this year, the Chapel of Awareness congregation and ministers (those remaining who didn't "retire" until they conveniently returned in April) worked hard to raise money through events and fundraising drives for new ceiling fans in the sanctuary, wall patches downstairs, and a new roof that will last for decades. Where was the donation from the Friends of Chapel and Reverend Berg's "retreats"? There were none.

The handling of these retreats is questionable at best, and certainly exclusionary. A look at photos from the retreats shows only Friends of Chapel members.

Now, in light of this, Reverend Berg indicates that he is "being accepted back" by the church's new leadership. (He discusses this new era in a May 23 posting at revericsblog.blogspot.com) While we sincerely wish him the best, he must answer for how these "Chapel" events could've been offered when they weren't offered by Chapel.

The handling of the finances for these retreats follows a Friends of Chapel pattern, as shown with the handling of Friends of Chapel "donations" that went straight to a person (Wanda Olson in that case) and not an organization.
